2022.01.17 16:33 transburneracct Has pop culture influenced your name?

I think it's really powerful that we have the opportunity for our names to reflect our values and interests.
My name is Parker James, and James is directly sourced from Harry Potter (fear not, I haven't given J.K. Rowling any money since 2011). It means a lot to me to have the same middle name as Harry because he was one of the first characters I emulated to express my boyhood as a child. I wore my Halloween costume constantly around the house and I even wrote Harry Potter as my name on preschool worksheets.
Keeping my middle initial as J was important to me because I personally think it's the best letter lol and I also have lots of nicknames like PJ. As a Gryffindor myself, I'm honored to have this name.
Thank you for letting me bask in my name journey. I can't wait to read yours.

2022.01.17 16:33 Antique-Apple7774 I (22M) feel like my confidence is slipping fast with the dating world and need some perspective that’s not just my closed self

Hi my name is Justin. I’m 22M and straight and can feel my confidence slipping out of my fingers. I’ve never been the most confident guy but there was a point where I felt good about myself in most aspects, however after my last relationship(2 years) ended with a bang I’ve lost most of it. It doesn’t help that no matter what dating app I use I never get matches and when I do they immediately unmatch me (doesn’t help the confidence). I know those apps are stacked against people who aren’t “attractive” but I have zero confidence in going out and trying my luck at the bars. I’ve tried telling myself that I don’t need a relationship and it will come when it comes but I must admit as the days go by I lose assurance the day will come. Any advice out there from someone who has maybe felt this way in the past? I know there isn’t much to say but it would be nice to know I’m not the only one who feels like they are not gonna find someone. Thanks y’all

Hi all. I'm an aspiring screenwritedirector from Croydon and am planning on filming an independent low budget movie around the end of the year.
Right now I'm in the planning stages and am working on the script.
Is anyone here an actor (early-mid 20s/male) looking for a leading role or have experience working on film sets in Croydon?
DM for info

2022.01.17 16:33 intjmoses Hereditary political systems

Have you ever thought that the main reason that hereditary political systems are unstable (as judged by today's number of those that remain) is because child or grandchildren are not of a type well suited to lead?
I know this is a generalization but I believe it to be accurate. Also, don't ask what type the children would be...I think we could guess. Also, I understand time period is important.
Isn't true that in democracies, we vote for personalities. Also, in a regime, don't they select a personality that can maintain the stability. If fact, doesn't history select the personality/person to bring change.

2022.01.17 16:33 Megnanimous3 How many teachers here?

Hey everyone! I was just sitting here on this snowy morning (NJ) wondering how many of us are teachers, and what it was about our experiences in brick and mortar schools that brought us to homeschooling. I want to note that I’m absolutely understanding of the fact that a parent does not need to be a teacher to teach their child(ren), I’m just asking those who are, and wondering about this separate information for teachers, partially because I feel there’s a strong argument for homeschooling from a teacher’s perspective.
I’ll share mine briefly, but I’m happy to elaborate if asked! I’m a college professor and have my Master’s in Composition & Rhetoric. Over the last (almost) decade of teaching and tutoring in formal and informal settings, I have encountered students in my classrooms that were totally failed by their schools (both public and private in most cases). The 18-year olds I teach are sometimes writing at a 7th grade level. When we have discussions that require critical thinking and the thoughtful consideration of complex ideas, their eyes either gloss over, or they don’t know what I’m talking about: everything from current events to ancient history, government, basic scientific principles, and more. I feel bad for these kids who were just moved along.
Additionally, most of them tell me that their K-12 teachers made them self-conscious, feel like failures or dumb, and were unnecessarily mean or lacked compassion or patience. Based on what they understand of writing and what they’ve conveyed to me about what they learned, they were taught how to read and write incorrectly, too. I know some/all of this is not the fault of the teachers, who are often told to teach strictly to the test or lose their jobs.
And I’ve also heard some awful tales of “discipline” and situations where students (and sometimes teachers) got away with blatant racism, homophobia, and sexism.
All of this, plus my own research (part of my master’s thesis concerned student agency in the classroom) and lots of conversations with my husband is what convinced me to homeschool our child, along with what I witnessed at his school.
Teachers, how about you?
