2022.01.17 16:38 DavidSeamanAMA Still no takers for my uncensorable video platform idea?

YouTube sucks.
TikTok is for dumb people, and cat ladies. (Sorry, I'm a cat dad myself, I know the temptation to watch those cat vids for hours. DON'T GIVE IN.)
30 seconds or 3 minutes is arguably the wrong constraint; it should be everyone has 1 hour, then the algo sorts who kept the attention, and who brought the engagement. With some provisos obviously.
I still own eth.video and I still think an UNCENSORABLE, simple upload video platform using IPFS and EPNS to push out uncensorable notifications of new content uploads would - literally - change our world.
Culturally, politically, in all the ways.
Visual media is huge. ETH community would own that space.
Lessssssgo! DM or find me.

2022.01.17 16:38 beatle_ Beaches in Caribbean/CA without the hassling?

I love Hawaii. It is safe, the beaches are great, there are lots of adventures, and excellent food.
However I'm having trouble finding somewhere more easily accessible to East Coast USA that can meet these sort of requirements, but maybe the biggest one is the hassling on the beach. In mexico/belize I've really struggled to enjoy a casual quiet beach without the feeling that I'll be hassled by a local.
Are there quiet beach towns without the hassling outside of the expensive islands?

We're an alliance that hums about about 22-23/24 people.
I'd say weekly we get 2 people that "join" that are inactive.
Am I the only one experiencing this? Inactive players, should just be alliance-less, not auto-joining open spots that could be used for active players.

2022.01.17 16:38 distrout does anyone else have a difficult time expressing themselves?

does anyone else have a difficult time expressing themselves? I noticed recently I've masked or repressed my natural reactions I have to things that I show people and responses I give to people. Im convinced it's because of my childhood (lots of abuse and uncertainty, also I can't remember much of it or what it was like to be a kid, buy I think I learned early on if I said or did things naturally authentically spontaneously or did what I wanted i would potentially be in danger and targeted for abuse so I think I learned to monitor me all the time and then move away from any authentic spontaneous expression. Then I just forgot. Forgot I ever learned it that's how I learned to live. And after living my life up till now I've been doing this repression (I'm 26 now) I only know how to be ten feet away from spontaneous interactions not just with people but with my internal self, I don't even react to things when I'm by myself authentically I don't think. I am afraid of my own emotions and physical emotional responses I think, so much so I just for the most part unknowingly panic and stuff it all away, it's even hard to know what I like or am into or interested in alot of the time.
Anyway because of this separation of self, I don't think I am really ever present in any given situation. I'm always, knowingly or unknowingly, analyzing, judging, interpreting, what I should be feeling or thinking rather than just being there and feeling anything that comes naturally. I'm curious that since I never feel present or safe to be natural that forming memories of my time is difficult to construct in the first place. Also I don't really talk to people about my life so it just adds another layer of not making my memories concrete by revisiting them by recalling and telling others about them.
Not sure why I'm posting this, not sure if it's relevant, I'm kind of just sad and going through my life lately seeing where it all started to go bad and this was something I could maybe remember. Not sure what memories are supposed to be anymore or how to access them, I don't think it matters anymore.
I have aphantasia as well, it where I can't mentally visualize things voluntarily and my dreams aren't even vivid they are like concepts I piece together. Not sure if it's related or relevant.
I also just considered, and def haven't discounted, that the SDAM I have is unrelated to what I just said. The me not being able to express myself could just be immature, haven't grown and am incredibly insecure.

2022.01.17 16:38 onex7805 Should I change the worldbuilding in my Sequel REDONE?

A few months ago, I wrote about an alternative Sequel story that is inspired by the Cold War with the Death Stars standing in allegories for nukes. (If you haven't read it before, you don't have to since this post will cover it in detail) It is separate from my REDONE, just a brief idea I had. However, I begin liking it more and more and thinking about how it could be merged with my REDONE continuity.
The post-Return of the Jedi timelines in Canon and Legends suffer the opposite problems. The Imperial remnants re-emerging as the First Order striking back makes sense. If anything, it wouldn't make sense for them to just disappear just because another Death Star and their Emperor are gone. The problem is that The Force Awakens' premise was the remake of A New Hope. From the worldbuilding perspective, it feels like a sequel to The Empire Strikes Back than Return of the Jedi. My REDONE was better in this regard since the New Republic actually exists and Leia's military is the official Republic Defense Force, but there are still a lot of aspects carried over from Canon that do not make much sense, like the Republic demilitarization, for example.
However, while much better than whatever the Sequels tried to do, I also didn't like the outright bizarre, too out-there direction The New Jedi Order took, too. The premise of the Yuuzhan Vong War story is the aliens from ANOTHER GALAXY wrecking the established power dynamics by killing almost everyone just cuz. Wait, what? This isn't the story we've been seeing before. It doesn't feel like a gradual, natural consequence to what has been built up before. It is like after reviving Palpatine and killing him again in The Dark Empire (which was just as idiotic as TROS, Luke turns to the dark side but apparently, it's only so he could learn why his father did it. Han meets his ex-girlfriend. Leia gets a lightsaber for a bigger on Nar Shaddah. The Imperial remnants use this bizarre vacuum superweapon that sucks out the matter of a planet. And the Emperor attempts to put his consciousness inside Leia's baby), the writers couldn't write new villains to top Palpatine, so they just threw a wrench into everything. It is the worldbuilding equivalent of Chandler's Law. When in doubt, have a man come through a door with a gun in his hand. Or in the case of Star Wars, if you can't top the Empire, have the super-powered Force-immune aliens from another galaxy come out of nowhere.
Overall, a more natural premise would be the Republic struggling against warlords, crime syndicates, nationalists after the collapse of the Empire ie the Iraqi Civil War or the Chinese Warlord era, which buys time for the Imperial remnants to rebuild their former glory, thus both the New Republic and the First Order vying to influence all those different factions in the geopolitical chess match.
Now, Canon does hint at this. What is interesting about the background of the Sequels is that for some reason the Republic never directly engaged in the battle against the First Order, rather they did it through the proxy war by supporting the Resistance--a paramilitary group formed by Leia Organa. However, it doesn't make much sense that the Republic wouldn't use its regular military.
The real-life Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union, which Lucasfilm has borrowed for their lore, was due to the nuclear weapons stopping them from escalating into open war. Nuclear wars kill leaders and VIPs. Every country is willy-nilly until its leaders are at risk of dying first. Everyone, including the leaders, has an incentive for de-escalation when the literal Earth is on the stakes. It is clearly the EU writers' attempt to band-aid the geopolitical status in The Force Awakens, which was more concerned with soft-rebooting A New Hope regardless of whether it makes for a natural continuation from the Original trilogy.
However, the "Cold War" concept still fascinates me. I believe this is the aspect the Sequels could have focused more on instead of another riff on the open war between another Rebellion and another Empire. I wonder if there is a good stand-in for the real-life nukes in the Star Wars universe...
Oh, yeah, it has one. It's a Death Star.
In The Force Awakens, the First Order develops the Starkiller Base that is basically another Death Star and uses it to conquer the galaxy again. Okay, it's A New Hope again. However, what if... the New Republic has one, too? Not just one, but dozens of Death Stars readying to travel to the First Order systems and fire their superlaser discs at their planets? Then we get a different story.
After the destruction of the second Death Star, the Liberation of Coruscant occurs, which went through a battle so fierce that both sides wasted so much of their resources. Basically, the Star Wars version of Stalingrad. (I didn't like how the Liberation of Coruscant worked in Canon) With the victory, the Republic officially establishes its space. The Empire wasted most of its resources in this single battle alone to defend the galaxy capital and the homeworld of humans. It failed in a crushing defeat for the Empire. So much of their resources have already been spent on the second Death Star, and now the Republic has ripped apart the economic and political center from the Empire. This means the Empire can no longer maintain a widespread influence or military to occupy the Core systems, so they are forced to retreat to the Outer Rim due to the crushing defeat.
However, the New Republic has not recovered all of its territories. After how the Empire ruled the galaxy, I doubt many systems would be keen on another massive central government. A wave of nationalism spreads. Many systems--especially nonhuman planets--in the Mid Rim and the Outer Rim secede from the Republic and form their own unique factions; big and small, so all the New Republic has left is the CoreWorlds. And what is the New Republic gonna do? Do over the Clone Wars all over again and turn half of the galaxy against them? Also, the New Republic can't take over the entirety of the galaxy even if the systems didn't secede since their military is basically guerilla forces. They would have trouble controlling what they have. They would need to standardize and modernize their military first before committing to another war.
For the Imperial remnant side, things would be worse. Various Imperial warlords claim legitimacy as a successor to the Emperor and fight each other. Some Imperial remnants might be devoted to creating a successor state to the Sith Empire, some might be secular, some might be not too speciest, some might be human supremacist, some might want to retake the entire galaxy and reclaim the former glory of the Empire, some might want to create an independent, unified Outer Rim empire... This is not mentioning the Imperials having to fight the non-Imperial loyalist factions the Outer Rim, pirates, bandits, and local resistances. It would be total chaos, but eventually, the First Order wins out and unifies them all.
Some scientists and technicians defect or get captured by the New Republic (like Operation Paperclip). It is just logical. Such a powerful weapon like Death Star cannot go away. Both regimes persist and continue the research on the planet destruction tech because they have no leverage to do another total war against each other. Both sides would want peace, and the Death Stars are deterrents. This results in an arms race followed by the cold war between the New Republic and the First Order.
Systems have to choose between joining the Republic or the First Order, voluntarily or by force. Both sides engage in the fights through proxy wars around the Rim regions rather than another galactic-wide warfare because they can't afford to raise a massive military. Their military spending is poured into Death Star constructions and their economies are much smaller now.
That is until the First Order develops a miniature Death Star technology that can be carried on the Star Destroyers (as shown in The Rise of Skywalker), meaning the weapons of mass destruction are now easily accessible and cost-effective. The Supremacy is the prototype of this new miniature Death Star. This was thought to be impossible, but if completed and mass produced, it will turn the cold war into a hot one.
This could be the core conflict in the trilogy. Through espionage and proxy wars, our heroes have to stop the First Order from developing such a tech (think of the Metal Gear series) while forced to question the morality of the New Republic for utilizing the Death Stars as a deterrent, making it a more complex morality tale instead of just another "good rebels vs bad empire" premise. It would give a unique identity to the trilogy.
If I were to actually realize this, it wouldn't mean that the Cold War idea will replace my REDONE. I want the general storylines of REDONE to remain to be the same, but the worldbuilding around them will be modified to incorporate the ideas from the Cold War treatment. For example, instead of the Supremacy having the shield trap technology, it would have the superlaser firing capability. The Chancellor being forced to consider the truce with the First Order would make more sense considering they don't want to risk a hot war using the Death Stars.
