2021.11.29 03:23 jjad16 Flawed Blades - Simple Question
I am studying the failure analysis of swords and I would like your input. The question is which of these swords would you trust to go in a battle or duel?
For Round 1: Ignore armor - Fight as if everyone was naked.
For Round 2: Armor - From the regions appropriate (Longsword = armored knight; Katana = 14th century samurai; Ulfberht Sword = 9th Viking; Scimitar = Ancient Egypt) Age of the weapon is negligible. All are fresh out of the forge.
C: Ulfberht Sword
For the katana: The sword configuration is kobuse. The hard steel is Tamahagane and the core is a medium steel. While forging this blade, the smith makes an error and quenches the blade twice in seawater. Later during testing, the blade has a chip 3/4 of the blades length but does not go past the Hamon. There are two crack on the surface of the blade. One is 2/5 of the blades length(Hagire) - One side and goes up slightly passed the Hamon. The other is at the tip (crow's beak Hagire).
For the Longsword: The sword configuration is a straight longsword with a hexagonal cross-section. The materials used are iron ores native to medieval Germany. Assume everything went perfect until quenching. The blacksmith forging this weapon made a mistake in regards of the length. The blade is too big for his furnace. Therefore, the smith sinks the blade as far as he could leaving 15% of the blade's length from the where the crossbars will be, out. The smith quenches the blade and test the upper portion of his blade with a filer. The area checked is hard.
For the Ulfberht Sword: The sword configuration is straight with a hexagonal cross-section. The material used is crucible steel but the blacksmith had to make several pucks of crucible steel in order to have enough material to make this blade. This left the other two ores untouched on a shelf, in a monastery in medieval Norway for months. Along the area where the grip of the sword will be, there is strong evidence of layering.
For the Scimitar: The sword configuration is an Egyptian scimitar, not a khopesh. The material used is Damascus steel (w/ Wootz Steel). Just before the quench, the blacksmith allowed the blade to slightly cool. After a short while, the smith notices that the blade was still glowing but rather faintly than before. The furnace fire had gone out and another order had come in, to once and for all finish this blade, the blacksmith submerges his blade in seawater. The blacksmith does not check its hardness and focusses on giving the blade a beautiful cross-section, grip and pommel, thinking that the customer would simply hang it for decoration. Once completed the blade looks beautiful.
Again which blade would you feel comfortable with?
Please write your answer in the comment section. I want you to chose instinctively.
It doesn't matter if you are right or wrong, I just wanted to get some results to what people think.

2021.11.29 03:23 Soren_Kulle [IIL] Chill/Introspective House EDM such as Lane 8, what else will I like?
I really love chilleslower more melancholy type songs such as Midnight or Little Voices by Lane 8.
I'm looking for more artists/songs that have a similar tone/vibe to those examples, a slower BPM and steady low beat.
They're the sort of songs you can go for a walk at night through a city and just get lost in your thoughts.

2021.11.29 03:23 VanillaClay Feeling grateful
I'm grateful for the Goodwill and Plato's Closet down the road. If I ever want something cool to wear or need a nice new sweater or scarf, I know I'll always find good options there that I can actually afford.
I'm grateful that I live right next to a library. Free books, a great place to hang out, and a cheap printer that covers my ass during summer and school breaks.
I'm grateful for Dollar Tree. I will live and die by the Tree because it is the only place left where everything truly is $1.00. Home decorations, office supplies, kitchen shit? It's all right there and a lot of it is NICE. I have so many cute ceramic plates that are holding up great. Plus THEY HAVE DISHWASHER PODS- I just found that out and it's saving my ass.
I'm grateful for Aldi and the fact that I can get good food for cheap there. When I lived on campus with no car, my only option was the overpriced campus market and that was shit on a part-time student salary. My food still isn't fancy but I have way more options and it's definitely healthier.
I'm grateful that I have a steady job, if not the highest paying, and a side hustle that's chill and lowkey, just cleaning up at a church. I make my own hours, plug in music, and go. No shitty customers or anything like that. It's quiet and pretty there.
I'm grateful for the Christian secondhand store that helped me be able to afford my first Christmas tree (that I bought for myself) and a lot of my ornaments.
I'm grateful for the fact that even though life is still paycheck to paycheck, I have so many great resources around me to make things easier. I can HAVE a Christmas tree and cute sweaters and nice dinners; maybe they aren't coming from anywhere fancy and maybe they are secondhand but I still have them! Life isn't easy and money is tight but I have safety nets and it's going along.
It's funny. My parents avoided a lot of these places growing up because they "weren't good enough". Now they're what's helping me make things better for myself. So many others don't have access to all that I do, and I feel blessed to live in an area that offers so much.
I'll be okay. I'm okay. 👍

2021.11.29 03:23 SeaUnderstanding6261 Off Road capable toyotas?
I am looking to enter the world of off roading since im moving to washington and there seems to be endless off road trails. I've never had to opportunity to off road but I would really like to learn as much as I can about it and find a great vehicle to get started. I would really prefer to go with a toyota. I have a subaru tribeca 2009 but I am not sure if that vehicle is even capable. I see toyota has off road packages on their tundras tacomas and 4runners and their newest rav4. I assume the TRD off road package is the way to go? I am looking to spend no more than 30k on a vehicle. I am also curious about the FJ cruiser.

2021.11.29 03:23 theforester000 What are historians thoughts on Mike Duncan's "Hero of Two Worlds"?
From what I understand he actually spent a couple years doing primary source research on Lafayette. So perhaps this book is better and more rigorous than his previous book The Storm Before the Storm, which AskHistorians seems to thing is misleading and no good. I searched but hadn't found any comments or review of the book on here. Thanks!

2021.11.29 03:23 Monke_with_no_brim How do you guys enjoy the game?
I have played nms for quite a long time, I have explored every type of planet, I have got 3 of my favourite class starships and I have finished the storyline. I know nexus missions are an option, but after a while they become repetitive doing them over and over again. I love exploration but there is not much point in going exploring because it's not necessarily rewarding to do so. I have a lot of bases and one massive underwater base on an earth-like planet so I don't see the point in making more bases. Community expeditions are not my thing. So, how do you guys have fun in nms after basically beating the aspect of the game?
